Google Shopping product title examples

A Google Shopping title is matched against the search and shown cut to roughly its first 70 characters, so the words that decide the click go first and the rest of the 150 fills with attributes people search for. Here are seven before/after title examples from different verticals and markets, the title formula each vertical uses, the bad titles that get products ignored or disapproved, and product highlight examples to pair with them.

We connect your store, build the feed and keep it in sync. Updated 2026-10-27.

At a glance

  • Google allows 1 to 150 characters and recommends using them all; shoppers usually see the first 70 or fewer, so put brand, product type and the key attribute first.
  • Formulas differ by vertical: apparel leads with brand, gender and type then color and size; electronics leads with brand and model; parts lead with compatibility.
  • On the feeds Textfinity has profiled, the average title uses about 20 of Google's 150 characters, so most stores have room to add searchable attributes.
  • Textfinity builds titles with a combine or advanced rule from your columns, or rewrites them with an AI config (100 to 150 characters, key information in the first 70).

Google's own examples follow the same order: brand, product, then variant attributes such as color and size.

What Google says about product titles

  • Length: 1 to 150 characters. Use all 150; the title is matched to searches.
  • Order: put the most important details first, because users usually notice only the first 70 or fewer characters.
  • Keywords: product name, brand and specific details such as "maternity" or "waterproof".
  • Brand: include it when it differentiates the product.
  • AI-written titles: Google asks for them in structured_title with the trained_algorithmic_media label rather than in title.
  • Language: write foreign words in the target language's alphabet; the title should match the feed language and the landing page.

Product title formula examples you can paste

Textfinity's advanced transform concatenates attributes with + and can fall back when a value is empty. The expression below adds the color only when the product has one, so single-color products do not end with a stray dash.

Examples

Worked examples, by situation

Each example is a different store and problem. The before is the title from the store export; the after is the title in the Shopping feed.

Fashion · Shopify · Google Shopping · 2,400 variants

Variant attributes added to a bare apparel title

Before

Linen Shirt

After

Marlow Men's Linen Shirt Relaxed Fit - Sand - M

How we set it up

We map title with an advanced rule: [product_vendor] + " Men's " + [product_title] + " Relaxed Fit - " + [variant_color] + " - " + [variant_size]. On a Shopify shop the DSL reads underscore names such as product_title and variant_color.

Electronics · CSV export · 3,000 SKUs

Model number alone becomes a searchable title

Before

XR-200

After

Sonora XR-200 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones, 40h Battery, Black

How we set it up

We map title with an advanced rule: [brand] + " " + [model] + " " + [product_type] + ", " + [battery] + " Battery, " + [color]. Column names must not contain spaces inside the brackets; if they do, the export renames them.

Furniture · WooCommerce · 600 SKUs

Short names rewritten from the product data

Before

Oslo

After

Oslo Solid Oak Dining Table 180 x 90 cm, Seats 6, Oiled Finish, Tapered Legs

How we set it up

We set up an AI config that enhances the title, reading title, description and the dimensions column as additional context. Output is 100 to 150 characters with the key information in the first 70. title then uses replace from AI config, with the original title as fallback.

Beauty · Finland · English source data

Title translated for a Finnish feed

Before

Hydrating Face Serum with Hyaluronic Acid 30 ml

After

Kosteuttava kasvoseerumi hyaluronihapolla, 30 ml

How we set it up

We set up an AI config that translates the title field into Finnish, and the Finnish feed maps title with replace from AI config. Google wants the title in the feed's language and the link pointing at the Finnish storefront.

Auto parts · B2B and retail · 12,000 SKUs

Compatibility first for parts

Before

Brake pad set

After

Front Brake Pad Set for VW Golf VII 2012-2020 - OEM 5Q0698151 - Ceramic

How we set it up

We map title with an advanced rule: [position] + " Brake Pad Set for " + [fits] + " - OEM " + [oem] + " - " + [material]. People search parts by vehicle and OEM number, so those go inside the first 70 characters.

Footwear · marketplace export · promotional titles

Bad title cleaned of promo text and caps

Before

SALE!!! BEST RUNNING SHOES FREE SHIPPING

After

Stride Women's Trail Running Shoes, Waterproof, Grey, EU 39

How we set it up

Promo words and capitals break Google's editorial rules, and a regex alone cannot recase a title, so we set up an AI config that enhances the title from brand, gender, color and size. Until a product's new title is accepted, replace from AI config falls back to the source title, so the titles are accepted before publishing, or we exclude those products with a filter rule (title matches regexp FREE SHIPPING|SALE) and remove the rule once they are accepted, since it reads the unchanged source title.

Home appliances · Google Shopping · 800 SKUs

Product highlights next to the title

product_highlight (TSV feed, one cell)

Extraction up to 600 m3/h,3 fan speeds and LED lighting,Fits 60 cm wall cabinets,Dishwasher-safe metal filters

How we set it up

We map product_highlight as a combine of highlight_1 to highlight_4 with the delimiter ",". Google wants 2 to 100 highlights of up to 150 characters, recommends 4 to 6, and recommends TSV for repeated fields; we publish the feed as TSV and keep commas out of each highlight.

Copy this plan

Plan: better Shopping titles in an afternoon

Start with a rule for the whole catalog, then use AI where the data is too thin.

  1. 01

Look at title length across the catalog

Feed hygiene's length distribution shows how many titles are far under 150 characters and which run over the limit.

What we set up: We connect your store and read feed hygiene's length distribution with you.
  2. 02

    Start a Google Shopping feed

The Google Shopping channel template pre-fills title and the other required columns.

What we set up: We start from the Google Shopping channel template.
  3. 03

Write the formula for your vertical

Pick the formula from the table above and build it from your columns. Check a handful of products before rolling it out.

What we set up: We build title as a combine or an advanced rule and check the output product by product in the product explorer.
  4. 04

Use AI for the products the formula cannot fix

Run AI over products with thin source data and approve the results before they go live.

What we set up: We set up an AI config that enhances titles; title uses replace from AI config, so only accepted titles reach the feed.
  5. 05

    Publish and compare

Register the feed URL in Merchant Center as a scheduled fetch and compare clicks per product group before and after in Google Ads.

What we set up: We hand you the feed URL and register it in Merchant Center with you: you give us access or we walk you through it.

Customization tips

Make it yours

Search terms beat brand names you invented

"Oslo" means nothing to a searcher; "oak dining table" does. Keep collection names, but after the product type, not instead of it.

Separate titles per channel

Meta and Snapchat show short titles on ads while Google rewards long ones. Keep a long title in the Google feed and a shorter combine in the social feeds instead of compromising one title for all.

AI titles cannot be shortened by setting

Textfinity's AI configs write 100 to 150 characters. For a short-title channel, keep the original title or trim at a separator with replace from regexp ^([^,]*),.*$ to \1.

Variants need distinct titles

If every color shares one title, shoppers cannot tell them apart and Google treats them as near duplicates. Always append the attribute that varies.

FAQ

Questions about google shopping product title examples

How long should a Google Shopping title be?

Up to 150 characters, and Google recommends using all of them. Put the most important details in the first 70 characters, because that is usually all a shopper sees in results.

What is a good product title formula for Google Shopping?

Brand, product type and the deciding attribute first, then variant details. For apparel: brand, gender, type, color, size. For electronics: brand, model, type, key spec. For parts: part type, vehicle fit, OEM number.

What are product highlights in Google Shopping?

product_highlight is an optional repeated attribute of short benefit statements, 1 to 150 characters each, with at least 2 and at most 100 per product; Google recommends 4 to 6. They must describe only the product, without promo text or keywords lists.

Can Google rewrite my product titles?

Google may customize titles shown in Shopping ads unless you opt out through your account manager or support, which typically takes 3 to 5 business days. A specific, accurate title reduces the reason for rewrites.
